There are three types of student visas.
1. Academic
Studies (F visa): For people who have been accepted into a
program to study or conduct research at an accredited U.S.
college or university. This is the most common student visa type and is used for a
course of academic study. The university or college typically
issues Form I-20 thru the SEVIS system which permits the applicant
to apply for a student visa at the US Embassy in their home country. The
applicant also has to establish that they have enough funds to pay for the course and live when studying.
2. Non-Academic
or Vocational Studies (M Visa) : For people who have been
accepted into a program to study or train at a non-academic
institution in the U.S.. Attending a flight school is a classic
example of the use of a M-1 visa
3. Academic
Studies as an Exchange Visitor (J Visas) : For people who
have been accepted into a program through a designated
sponsoring organization to participate in an exchange visitor
program in the U.S. The "J" visa is for educational
and cultural exchange programs. Note that J-1 s are most
typically used for interns and trainees.
4. B visa: Additionally, if none of the above are available, it is
also possible to use a B2 visa to study in the US for a limited
time period and in limited circumstances.
What
is SEVIS and SEVP? What should you know about it?
The
Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) is designed to help
the Department of Homeland Security and Department of State
better monitor school and exchange programs and F, M and J
category visitors. Exchange visitor and student information is
maintained in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information
System (SEVIS). SEVIS is an Internet-based system that maintains
accurate and current information on non-immigrant students (F
and M visa), exchange visitors (J visa), and their dependents
(F-2, M-2, and J-2). SEVIS enables schools and program sponsors
to transmit mandatory information and event notifications via
the Internet, to the Department of Homeland Security and
Department of State (DOS) throughout a student or exchange
visitor's stay in the United States.
All
student applicants must have a SEVIS generated I-20 issued by an
educational institution approved by DHS, which they submit when
they are applying for their student visa.
